At what age do baby's start eating solid foods or finger foods?

Question by Charlie: At what age do baby's start eating solid foods or finger foods?
My fiance is pregnant and we were just wondering when to give the baby jar food. Basically we were wondering when the baby can eat something other than milk. This is our first, so we are very nervous and excited! Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.
